Multimedia Transmission over IP Networks

Principles of IP telephony. Voice encoding and transmission over IP. Architecture of VoIP using SIP and H.323. Implementation of VoIP. Securing VoIP networks. Multimedia and streaming. SAP, SDP and RTSP. Streaming at FIT. Introduction to videoconferencing using H.323. Audio-video technique in computer networks.

Subject specific learning outcomes and competences

Students are familiar with applications and protocols for video and voice transmission over IP networks. They are able to setup multipoint videoconference, oneway voice and video transmission in HD quality. They are able to connect and configure all communication components.

Learning objectives

The course aims to introduce students technologies for video and voice transmission over IP networks. Labs will be focused on configuration video and voice communication using dedicated hardware devices and software applications.


Prerequisite kwnowledge and skills

  • Principles and application of Unix and Windows operating systems
  • Studying texts and documents in English
  • Network architecture - ISO/OSI model, TCP/IP
  • Unicast and multicast transmission
  • Fundamental principles of network services.

  1. Introduction to VoIP and networking.Cisco Call Manager Express.
  2. Principles of VoIP. Configuration of CME.
  3. IP telephony using H.323. Gatekeeper GNU GK.
  4. IP telephony using SIP.
  5. SIP server Asterisk. Gateway to GSM networks.
  6. VoIP quality. Securing VoIP. 
  7. Multimedia and streaming. MPEG TS.
  8. Signalization using SAP, SDP and RTSP.
  9. Transmitting media using RTP and RTCP. Streaming at FIT.
  10. Introduction to video conferencing.
  11. Video conferencing using H.323.
  12. Audio-video technics in computer networks.
