Measurement of Physical Quantities

IMFV Acad. year 2011/2012 Summer semester 6 credits

The course presents basic sensor principles, their parameters and construction. It deals with instrumentation, non-electrical quantities measurements concepts and procedures. It also presents the differences between conventional electrical measurements of the electrical quantities and non-electrical quantities on the real industry systems. Also the optical sensors, optical fibre sensors, data collecting and acquisition processes are presented.

Subject specific learning outcomes and competences

Course graduate should get basic knowledge and facilities in sensor field and the most commonly measured non-electrical quantities, including measurement concept design and results process and evaluation.

Learning objectives

The goal of the course is to introduce students to the basic modern solutions and methods of physical quantities measurements. These represent more than 95 % of all measured quantities in the laboratory and industrial areas. The course should also present sensor and physical quantities measurements importance in technical and non-technical fields, science and generally in information technologies.

Prerequisite kwnowledge and skills

Fundamentals of physics, electrical and electronic engineering.

Syllabus of lectures

  1. Introduction, basic terms, sensor and instrumentation concepts, sensor construction.
  2. Position and dimensions measurements.
  3. Velocity and acceleration measurements.
  4. Forces, pressures and weight measurements.
  5. Deformations and force moment measurements.
  6. Vibration measurements.
  7. Temperature, heat and thermal flow measurements.
  8. Flow measurements.
  9. Emission measurements (light, infrared, UV).
  10. Ionizating emission measurements.
  11. Material composition and humidity measurements.
  12. Protection technique measurements (monitoring).
  13. Measurement system for data collecting, acquisition and presentation, local networks.

Progress assessment

Preparedness checking in practical lessons. Two term tests.

Controlled instruction

It is necessary to participate in all 10 laboratory practical lessons.

Exam prerequisites

It is necessary to participate in all 10 laboratory practical lessons and two tests. And to elaborate 3 complete protocols from selected laboratory themes.
