Learning objectives

The course has been set up to teach (as a part of the required knowledge in electrical engineering) the principles of safe design, realization, and operation of electrical installation and devices. The instruction will be directed towards preparing the students to take the examination based on ordinance no. 250/2022 Coll. and subsequent Government Regulation No. 194/2022 Coll., On professional qualifications in electrical engineering. After passing the exam, the students will be qualified to work independently in the field of electrical engineering.

The course is not intended for first-year students bachelor students!

Upon completion of the course, the students will be able to perform the following tasks:
- evaluate the risks and avoid any danger posed by electricity,
- interpret the legal or technical regulations and standards related to the given discipline,
- explain the dangers of electricity to persons not familiar with this province,
- instruct persons intending to operate an electrical apparatus,
- apply first aid in case of electric shock.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Students wishing to enroll in the course are expected to be capable of applying Kirchhoff’s and Ohm’s laws to single-phase and three-phase circuits.

Syllabus of lectures

1. Legal regulations, technical standards, and qualifications in electrical engineering: the Czech Republic and other European countries, electrical apparatuses and networks.
2. Electric shock in rooms and spaces, shielding and protection of powered objects, safe electrical products and installations, connection of electrical appliances.
3. Impact of the electric current on the human organism, protection against electric shock.
4. Protective equipment, assessment of operational risks, standardized safety signs and instructions; communicators and controllers, safe handling and operation of an electrical apparatus.
5. Fire safety of electrical devices.
6. In-class test.
7. Immediate first aid and resuscitation practice using a dummy.
8. Protection of electrical and electronic devices against lightning and overvoltage.
9. Summary of issues for examination before the interview.
10. Final test.
11. Interview.
12. Interview.
13. Interview.

Progress assessment

Course assessment is based on two written tests:

  • 0–40 points from a progress test, and
  • 0–60 points from a final test.

Passing the tests and obtaining a total of 50 points is the sole requirement for successfully completing the course. (The following conditions apply only to obtaining the bonus qualification.)

The course offers an optional bonus: the opportunity to obtain a Certificate of Professional Competence for electrical work pursuant to Section 6 of Government Regulation No. 194/2022 Coll. – skilled person authorized to work independently on electrical equipment up to 1 kV AC or 1.5 kV DC in non-explosive environments (hereinafter referred to as the "Certificate").

The rules for obtaining the Certificate are governed by the aforementioned government regulation and Act No. 250/2021 Coll. Requirements include:

  • attending 5 mandatory lectures, as per the schedule;
  • achieving 80% of the total possible points across both tests; and
  • passing an optional oral examination before a committee.

Lectures are held twice weekly; the schedule is arranged so that, in the event of absence or a scheduling conflict, students can attend the lecture during the alternative time slot.

The government regulation requires professional qualification, defined as the completion of an education in electrical engineering. For this course, only education from FEKT is recognized, and the Certificate is issued only after the completion of said education. Additionally, practical experience gained in laboratories is recognized as part of the qualification. An individual without prior experience must work under supervision for one year, yet the certificate remains valid. The certificate is issued with a three-year validity period; therefore, the course is unsuitable for first-year bachelor's students. The course may be taken twice during one's studies (once at the bachelor's level and once at the master's level).

Conditions for bachelor's degree programs:

  • Students in BPC-APE and BPC-IBE cannot obtain the Examination Certificate because these study programs do not meet the requirements for professional qualification. They may still take the course as a standard FEKT subject, without the Examination Certificate.
  • Students in BPC-AMT, AUDB-ZVUK, and BPC-BTB can obtain the Examination Certificate with recognition of six months of practical experience.
  • Students in AUDB-TECH, BPC-EKT, BPC-EMU, BPC-MET, BPC-NCP, BPC-SEE, BPC-TLI, and BPC-AMT can obtain the Examination Certificate with recognition of one year of practical experience.

Conditions for follow-up master's degree programs for students who have completed their bachelor's education at FEKT:

  • Previous completed studies at FEKT (typically a bachelor's degree) that enable the fulfillment of professional qualification and practical experience requirements are taken into account.
  • Students in MPC-IBE cannot obtain the Examination Certificate because the study program does not meet the requirements for professional qualification. Students may still take the course as a standard FEKT subject, without the Examination Certificate. (In the case of a previously completed specialization such as BPC-TLI, students meet the professional qualification requirements).
  • Students combining specializations BPC-BTB + MPC-BTB, MPC-JAE, or MPC-KAM may obtain a Certificate of Examination with recognition of six months of practical experience.
  • Students of other specializations may obtain a Certificate of Examination with recognition of one year of practical experience.

Conditions for Master's degree programs for students from other universities are available upon request from the course supervisor.
