A standard course for pre-intermediate to intermediate students of general and professional English. The general layout and materials used for the course correspond with the underlying approach of the integrated skills development; study materials are focused primarily on practising communicative and social skills, which aspect is further emphasized in the numerous grammar exercises assigned to the students. Seminar work features numerous topics and discussions, whereby the students are granted extensive vocabulary development. Thus, each lesson represents a synthesis of all the elements necessary to achieve good language performance in a wide range of everyday situations and business matters.

Subject specific learning outcomes and competences

The ability to work actively in an English lecture/tutorial and the understanding of English grammar and usage as present in everyday business and professional practices. Using the basic techniques of reading (skimming, scanning, selection and understanding). Applying the techniques and rules of formal and informal written communication. The ability actively deal with everyday business agenda in English.

  1. Grammar: Comparatives and superlatives. Listening and Topic Discussion: English in the world.
  2. Tense Review: Present Simple and Present Continuous. Interrogatives and frequency adverbs. Vocabulary: Personal data. Everyday Communication: meeting new people, introductions and greetings, welcoming a visitor, goodbyes.
  3. Tense Review: Past Simple and Present Perfect Simple. Regular and irregular verbs. Vocabulary: Trends. Jobs and work. Producers, production and distribution of goods.
  4. Reading and Listening: job and employer profiles. Everyday Communication: doing business on the phone and arranging for a meeting. How to accept or refuse invitations and offers. Presenting an opinion. Pronunciation: vowels and dipthongs, telephone numbers. Technical text: Computers Make the World.
  5. Tense Review: Present Perfect Simple and Present Perfect Continuous. Prepositions expressing time, position and movement. Vocabulary: Development in industry and industrial technologies; economy and economics. Life, work, sports and leisure time in a city. Technical Text: Cache Memory.
  6. Reading and Listening: Asian economies. Ecological projects. Doing sports. Everyday Communication and Situations: Small talk. How to express apologies, agreement, offers of support and feelings of surprise.
  7. Tense Overview: Present Continuous, the be going to form + infinitive and the modal verb will + infinitive used for future reference. Vocabulary and Listening: business trips; booking and staying in a hotel. Technical Text: Data Mining.
  8. Grammar: Passives. Reading and Listening: arranging for and attending a business meeting. Everyday Communication: English for letters, e-mails and fax messages. Techniques of writing. Technical Text: People in Computing.
  9. Grammar: Revision. Countable and Uncountable Nouns. Modal verbs and phrases of structuring the significance of an action. Vocabulary and Listening: National cultures. Cultures, food and professional communication. Technical text: Broadband communications.
  10. Grammar: Time Clauses and Conditional Clauses. Reading and Listening: attitudes to work and leisure time. Eating in Europe and the USA. Everyday Communication: business negotiation in a restaurant. Technical text: Safe Data Transfer.
  11. Vocabulary: Flying as a means of transport. Industrial art and architecture.
  12. Reading: Transformations. The Musée d´Orsay. Tate Modern. No-frills airlines. Everyday Communication and Listening: airline tickets and airports. How to arrange for a business meeting II.
  13. Semester Test.

Progress assessment

Active participation in seminars, semester test with the pass mimimum of 50% (= 20 points).

Controlled instruction

Active participation in seminars, semester test (20 - 40 points), final examination (30 - 60 points).
