A standard course of English for intermediate students oriented on both general and technical English. An integrated approach is applied during teaching this course. The chosen materials are aimed at developing communicative and social skills and phrases and grammar is explained at concrete examples of usage. Each lesson contains tasks for reading, writing, listening and speaking. The course is focused on enlarging business, social and technical vocabulary and its practical usage. The aim of the course is to prepare students for dealing with common business agenda in English as well as enriching their technical vocabulary.

Subject specific learning outcomes and competences

To be able to speak about topics contained in the textbook accurately and fluently (with a certain error tolerance). To be able to use basic reading skills ( skimming, scanning, reading for a particular information). To understand English-led lesson. To be able to write formal and informal correspondence, to send a fax, to fill in a form, to lead a business correspondence. To manage another piece of professional vocabulary and to understand relations between sentences.

Learning objectives

Acquisition of new vocabulary. Developing grammar knowledge. Developing the language skills (reading, speaking, listening and writing). Introducing and revising common phrases of spoken English. Development of communication skills.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The subject knowledge on the secondary school level is requested.

Syllabus of numerical exercises

  1. Introductions and greetings. Present Simple and Continuous, action and state verbs. Listening, inviting and welcoming a visitor.
  2. Vocabulary development focused on synonyms, prefixes and suffixes. Past Simple and Past Perfect. Subject and object questions.
  3. Functions: Making a phone call, making and cancelling an arrangement. Vocabulary: Adjectives describing personal qualities and characteristics.
  4. Technical text: Recent developments in IT. Functions: expressing your opinion, agreeing and disagreeing, participating in a meeting or a discussion.
  5. Reading: Present trends in society. Present Simple and Continuous, Past Simple and adverbs.
  6. Functions: Requests and offers. Vocabulary: Sales and costs. Grammar: Modal verbs.
  7. Preparation for a presentation and giving talks. Writing e-mails.
  8. Vocab: Job description. Technical text: Safe data.
  9. Reading and listening: How to get a perfect job. Vocabulary: Advertising products.
  10. Business correspondence. Grammar: Past Simple and Continuous, Past Perfect.
  11. Technical text: Safe data transfer. Vocabulary: Professional development.
  12. Reading: Common banking and financial operations. Functions: Leaving recorded messages on the answering machine.
  13. Semester test.

Progress assessment

Active participation in seminars, semester test with the pass mimimum of 50% (= 20 points).

Controlled instruction

Active participation in seminars, semester test (20 - 40 points), final examination (30 - 60 points).
