The course is focused on the basic knowledge of grammatical tenses and structures. The students' ability to communicate in everyday situations is developed. The students will work with technical texts to get acquainted with basic technical terminology.

Subject specific learning outcomes and competences

The students' ability to communicate in everyday situations will be developed. They will master the basic grammatical structures and new vocabulary, both general and technical.

Learning objectives

The course for lower intermediate students is aimed at learning basic vocabulary and grammar and developing the four language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. The students will learn basic technical terminology.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Knowledge of English at elementary level or acquisition of at least 11 to 20 points in the entrance test.

1. Unit 1: Present Simple. Frequency adverbs. 2. Unit 1: Organizing vocabulary - topic groups, verb groups etc. Introductions and greetings. 3. Unit 2: Present Continuous versus Present Simple. Work - verb groups. 4. Unit 2: Describing a company. Making contact. 5. Unit 3: Past Simple. Sports and leisure - verb groups. 6. Unit 3: Past Simple - finishing. Conversation topics. 7. Unit 4: Futures: going to+infinitive, Present Continuous. At a hotel. 8. Unit 4: Writing letters, emails, faxes. Staying at a hotel. 9. Unit 5: Mass and count nouns. Expressing quantity. 10. Unit 5: Food. At a restaurant. 11. Unit 6: Comparative and superlative adjectives. Air travel. 12. Unit 6: Making arrangements. Technical text. Revision. 13. Semester test.

  1. Unit 1: First meetings.Tenses, parts of speech, questions and social expressions.
  2. Unit 2: The world of work. Present tenses-simple and continuous. Verb groups. Making contact.
  3. Unit 2: Finishing-collocation, describing a company.
    Unit 3: Challenges. Past tense-explanation and exercises.
  4. Unit 3: Finishing-past simple and past continuous, nouns, verbs and adjectives, making negatives, making connections. Sports and leisure file.
  5. Unit 4: Plans and arrangements. Expressing future - exercises. Hotel file.
  6. Unit 4: Finishing-words and symbols. Emails faxes and letters. Staying at a hotel. Units 1-4 revision.
  7. Review Unit A: Units 1-4 revision. Mid-semester test.
  8. Unit 5: How healthy is your lifestyle? Mass and count nouns, expressing quantity. Food file.
  9. Unit 5: Word groups. Living in different environment-comparison of lifestyles. At a restaurant.
  10. Unit 6: Flying gets cheaper. Comparative and superlative adjectives, synonyms and antonyms. Travelling.
  11. Unit 6: Word groups, air travel file. Transformations.
  12. Unit 6: Finishing-making arrangements. General revision.
  13. Semester test.

Progress assessment

Active 75% attendance at classes and continuous work on given assignments. Semester test. Examination.
