Abstract
Biological development provides a significant inspiration for the scientists in the area of computational intelligence (so-called soft-computing), especially in combination with evolutionary algorithms. The goal of this paper is to propose an overview of the basic principles of ontogeny and various approaches to the development for the evolutionary design of digital circuits. The best-known models of the development are explained and some modifications of these models are presented together with the experimental results from the field of evolutionary design of combinational circuits. In conclusions possible directions of the future research are outlined.
